Going To Be Needing This in Every Color: Cozy Cardi Perfection

The search for the perfect cardigan is an on-going journey in my life.  I just love cardigans!  They are a perfect layering piece and are just so cozy.  The options are endless and the next one is often more perfect than the last.  I do have a couple of favorites in my closet that I have been wearing for years and they are still the ones to beat.  The camel cashmere one I’m wearing below is one of those.  I got it years ago in Buckhead and paid a little more than I would normally pay for a cardi, but the color, cut and style were all passing my 3-second test.  If I had a dollar for every time I’ve worn this sweater, I could have paid for it 10 times over.  I still wear it every season and it even has a couple of holes.  This year I’m going to find someone to repair those because I have no plans to retire this sweater any time soon.

But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more new favorites.  I found this one in Free People this week.  It was way cuter on that I was able to capture in this picture.  I haven’t mastered the dressing room mirror selfie yet.  Just trust me.  It is so cute on.  I’m wearing a medium for reference sake.  It is an oversized cardigan that is super soft and really cozy.  It comes in at least 3 colors, including this soft gray.  It hits well below the hips so it would be great over skinnies, cropped boot cuts and short dresses and cut-offs.  It would be so cute over game day tees and even over bathing suits for winter afternoons at the beach.  Grab the sneakers we talked about a few posts ago, some cropped boot cut jeans, a SMIJ tee and hat and your weekend OOTD is casual chic.  Weekend in view….

Hike the Hooch: First Stop, Island Ford

{SMIJ by Jill “Game Day” hats and football thermal available at Henry & Pearl}

We love to hike and part of the fun is heading out of town an hour or more to find great spots to explore.  Let me clarify “we love”.  It’s always me coming up with the idea and “breaking the news” to the rest of the family.  Pat is usually pretty quick to jump on board.  I think he has already prepared himself for what he knows is coming as soon as the weather starts getting nice.  The kids want to know “how long of a drive is it?”, “can we bring our iPads, iPhones, etc?”, “What time will we be back?”, “What about my friends?”.  They give in pretty easily because they know I won’t give up!  And, let me tell you, without fail, 100% of the time, the one who complains the most about going is the one who never wants to leave.  Just sayin… Sometimes mom does know best.  And, we are all just different people after a few hours in nature.  There is just nothing like getting that fresh Georgia air into every last cell in your body.

So, while it’s fun to explore the endless options to hike around Georgia, sometimes you just don’t have that much time.  For those days, we have so many great options right in town.  I thought this Fall it would be fun to explore some favorites around the Chattahoochee.  Please share your experiences, too.  We are always looking for new places to explore.

First stop, Island Ford in Sandy Springs.  This park is right off Exit 6 in Dunwoody.  Very easy to get to, lots of parking and well-managed and staffed.  It is open every day except Christmas!  There is even a nice visitor’s center with clean restrooms and a park attendant to answer questions.  For your little – or big – scientists, they have a cool microscope display where the kids can get up close and personal with things they see in Georgia.

We started with this hike because it is very easy.  It is short and flat with breathtaking views of the river.  You can even take your shoes off and wade into the cool water in some kid-friendly spots.  We wish we would have brought a little snack because we wanted to enjoy a picnic on one of the rocks sticking out into the river – and because no one wanted to leave.  Remember that “mom knows best” thing…. The kids want to come back next weekend with bathing suits and a picnic.

The trail is fully shaded the entire way, but you can easily step off the trail at many spots to get close to the river and enjoy the sun.  I do recommend bug spray although we didn’t get bit, it seemed like a good thing to have along.  There are also two huge rock formations along the trail that kids can explore.  Great picture spots, too!  People were fishing, rafting, kayaking and enjoying this river.  We had a blast and we were back home right after lunch time with our lungs full of fresh air, our minds calm and plans for our next Chattahoochee adventure.  Stay tuned…

Dusters: Great Transition Pieces – Especially in THIS Color

When it comes to great seasonal transition fashion items, not much beats a long cardigan, duster or kimono.  I, especially love them in stand out colors like this gorgeous mustard shown here.  There are 5 reasons I love these for transitional months like September.
First of all, they are flattering on pretty much all body types.  They are slimming and elongate the entire look.
Secondly, they are a great layer that can easily be removed if afternoon temps creep up as they often do in the Fall.
Third, there are just days (everyday) where some of us like to have our booties covered.  I mean, picking up kids, groceries and all the maneuverings of motherhood requires lots of bending and twisting and I personally don’t like to worry about what is or is not showing.  So, there’s that.
Then, they go over everything!  They look cute over everything from cut-off jeans shorts for a weekday of errands to a shift dress for a Sunday brunch.
Lastly, there are lots of choices and they have been in style for a few years and don’t seem to be going out of style any time soon.  With this in mind, you can invest with confidence.  Since these have been around for awhile, one way to update your collection is to grab one in an on-trend fabric like velvet or velour.  Happy September, Pretties!

There is No Place Camo is Not Welcome this Fall + 3 Ways to Wear Camo

If you have followed SMIJ for even 5 minutes, you know I  L O V E  C A M O!  I don’t know why, but I jumped on this trend early and have been fully committed to it ever since.  The trend seems to just be gaining steam after a few years and that makes me very happy.  Pretty much every year we introduce a new camo SMIJ tee, too.  I am very excited about this year’s “Tailgate Y’all” which will be available for the first time this Friday at Henry & Pearl.  Camo is showing up in workout gear, bathing suits, tees, coats, shoes, bags and the list goes on.  My personal favorite camo pieces are jackets, jeans or tees.  If you are just getting on board the camo trend, you may wonder how to wear it.  Here are a few of my ideas.

  1.  Keep is casual and use camo as a neutral.  Instead of jeans or khakis, throw on a pair of camo skinnies and top them with a graphic tee and wear booties or sneakers.
  2. Camo dresses are a personal fave.  I love to toss a little gold or chunky necklace over a camo tee dress.  I keep it simple with a neutral wedge or a retro sneaker.
  3. Don’t wear two camo pieces at once.  I probably don’t need to say this, but… just in case you were wondering.  Unless you are actually going hunting, one camo piece per outfit is perfect.

OK, time to have some fun!  Below are 46+ camo pieces currently available.  There will be something you love.  I’ve included some high-end designers’ takes on camo, too.  Click on any link to get more details or shop the pieces.  Have fun and join me in my camo obsession.

Save the Date: SMIJ Tailgate Trunk Show, Sept 1st at Henry & Pearl

Football season is so close I can smell it. To kick-off the season, we are hosting a SMIJ Tailgate Trunk Show at Henry & Pearl.  See it on Facebook HERE.  We’ll do the event from 11-2, I think.  That night Cambridge and Milton play each other at Cambridge and all the College games start that weekend.  We’ll have NEW tees in college colors PLUS a new graphic for 2017 that I am sooooo excited about.  I am grabbing one for myself as soon as my Dad gets them printed!  We are going to have it in short and long sleeve and several colors that can work for any team.  I want one in every color, but I think I’ll grab a camo one.  Or maybe one of each… Hee Hee!  The first time those will be available will be at this event.  For now, grab any one of these tees pictured here at Henry & Pearl before they sell out.  I won’t be getting anymore short sleeve high school tees in this year.  I hope you stop by the event to say “hi” and enjoy a little tailgating with SMIJ.

3 Denim Styles You Should Have for Fall

I had the most fun yesterday.  I friend called and asked if I wanted to go jeans shopping with her yesterday.  It took me about 10 seconds to rearrange my day and re-prioritize to make that happen!  We had a blast!  She scored big time and I got to really dig in on this year’s styles to share with you.  This will take more than one post, for sure.  There are the cutest jeans this year.  I overheard other shoppers saying the same thing.  This year really has too many must-haves.  Hopefully, these fun denim trends are around for awhile so I can add to my collection over time.  For today, I thought it would be fun to share the three that I think are great starters for the Fall.

  1. A cropped released hem bootcut is a great one and every brand is doing their version.  Here is a favorite from Frame and I’ve linked up a bunch of jeans below in a chart where you’ll see more.
  2. You can’t go wrong with another pair with some varying denim washes.  I am not even kidding when I tell you that this is exactly what I wore to my first day of high school.  Things really do come back around.  Here is the pair pictured in this post and the ones my friend got.
  3. OK, this is one I’ve never had before, but tried on and LOVED.  A side stripe is totally on-trend and super cute.  They come in many colors and brands and styles, but one thing is for sure, the side stripe is in.  This is one of my favorites in that trend.

See below for the collection I’ve linked up to show you just some of the favorites I have for the season.  This list was compiled with denim and trend experts at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and a 3 hour fitting room session so I feel pretty confident we are on point here.  It’s going to be a fun season for those of us who love jeans!

Going to the U.S. Open? Travel Chic

Anyone headed to the U.S. Open in a few weeks?  This trip remains on my Bucket List, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start outfit planning for it.  Since it’s still pretty hot in NYC in early September, this irresistible outfit would be great for the freezing cold plane ride there.  New York-bound in a cute “New York” sweatshirt in a great summer navy is the perfect travel outfit.  Not only is the outfit cute and chic, but it is super comfy.  The sweatshirt is cozy, but not too heavy and the jeans are stretchy and soft without losing their fit.  Toss on some wedges that you can slip out of in-flight and you’ll look New York Chic to start your trip.  Shop the pieces below.

Sky High Stripes

The cut of these jeans combined with the vertical stripes do great things for me!  I think they would be so cute for Game Days, too.  I would style the white ones with camo or army green shirts with on-trend patches.  Or, if you happen to have black as one of your school colors like the hubs and me, the white ones can be styled in more ways that I can imagine.  I ‘ll be posting all season!  The others would look so cute with SMIJ Game Day tees in your school colors.  Just sayin… You can grab one – or one of each! – at Henry & Pearl in Milton, GA.  Throw on some fun wedges or current sneakers and you are all set.  Wait until you see our new “Game Day” hats, too.  This outfit is shaping up nicely!

Tees & Jeans, the SMIJ Way

Hi. I’m Jill and I love t-shirts.  Always have.  I can remember taking tees out of my Dad’s closet all through high school and then the lifelong quest of finding the perfect white tee, which still continues.  I love jeans-and-a-tee for most days, but I don’t want just any old sloppy tee.  I seek cute, flattering tees to go atop my rock star denim collection, of course.  Some I find and many I make.  I have a blast coming up with our SMIJ tee collection and nothing is more thrilling than seeing you all wearing them.

We just launched out 2017 Football Tee collection and we’re selling like crazy – some are already sold out.  I have more coming to re-stock one time PLUS one new style.   This week our high school colors launched and our college colors are arriving in a few weeks.  There is a new graphic coming that I think you are going to love.  I’m bursting to tell you, but I’m going to keep it a secret…

Stay tuned for all the fast-moving, fun, football details.  Thanks for being SMIJ with me!

Trip Itinerary – Boston, 3 Days with Family

If you’ve been following for awhile, you know I took a big road trip to Boston this past summer.  I realize I never shared my itinerary.  I did a lot of research to try to cover as much as possible with a 3 year old in tow.  I think we did pretty good and we all had an absolute blast.  If you want to plan a trip, too, maybe my homework will give you a head start.

Also, check out my Instagram feed from July – I put lots of details about these pictures and what I loved about my trip to Boston, MA.
