More Beach, Please – Resort Style

I think the school system must have realized that we all need the beach a few times per school year. I love how we have all these breaks giving us many chances to breathe that sea air. I’m already picking fabrics and styles for Spring/Summer 2018 Cover-Ups and Vacation Shorts. Plan lots of beach days because you’re going to want to wear SMIJ S/S ’18.

For Red, White & Blue, Look No Further Than MuMu

For Red, White & Blue, look no further than MUMU.  I built a list of 67 items that I would love to wear – every last one of them passes the “SMIJ-3-second-test” (Scroll all the way down to see all 67).  I plan to spend the weekend at the beach and these MUMU pieces go very nicely in that environment.  From the coffee shop in the morning, to the beach all day to walking up to get ice cream each evening – and especially to see fireworks.  I know which one I’m wearing for the fireworks already!  Click on any of the pictures to shop each piece.  Have fun and get your RED, WHITE and BLUE on!  U.S.A.!

50 Elements of SMIJ Style • #25 • Travel Light with Summer Dresses

I love summer dresses for traveling.  You can always layer on top for chilly evenings or over-air-conditioned airports while keeping things simple, but chic.  A summer dress needs only a few little accessories and cute sandals and you’re all set.  No pants, belts, matching tops, etc eliminating half your packing list.  I usually bring one pair of white jeans and a cute top, but the rest is just summer dresses.  They make road trips potty breaks easier, too.  Just sayin’….

Here are some current faves that would be perfect for any summer trip.  I curated a list with some variety so you could have different looks that could take you from a travel day to a nice dinner.  There are only a million great dresses out there so I narrowed it down to some of my favorite dress retailers.  Happy Trails!

Heavenly Dress

One last post before the holiday weekend because I just have to share this heavenly dress with you all.  First of all, I’ll be over-wearing this all summer long.  It’s super lightweight, blue and white striped (which works so well for summer), flows in the breeze and is just perfection from head to toe.  I dressed it up with some fun sparklies and wedges for Graduation Parties and dressed it down with red sandals and silver necklace, earrings and ring (Lagos is my go-to set for these days…) for last day of school parties and girls’ weekday lunch.  My point?  This dress works for summer!

Run your cute little booty over to Lou & Grey and grab one for the holiday weekend.  It would even work as a cover-up!  Love, Love, Love!

{I’ve also linked below to many great Lou & Grey dresses.  I have several of their tee and racerback dresses that are so fun for summer, travel and everyday fun.}

Vacation Goals

A Johnny Was fabulous & flowy tunic or kimono is on my vacation dream list.  Occasionally, I stop by one of their stores and dream and browse.  It is going to be close to impossible to narrow it down to just one.  Every one I look at is just as gorgeous as the last!  I have several trips planned this summer so I’d better man-up and decide at some point.  In the meantime, my 2016 vacation dream list is taking shape.  If it flows, bronzes or shimmers, it’s probably on my list.  Shop my choices below:

50 Elements of SMIJ Style • #23 • Flamingos Go with Summer

My favorite form of pink in the summer is… FLAMINGO!  I love this little crossbody flamingo bag from Francesca’s. It came in other fun summer things like anchors and watermelon slices, too.  We even have a SMIJ by Jill Flamingo Cover-Up.  I love it over a black bathing suit on a hot July day at the beach. Flamingos and summer just go together and they are a SMIJ style must for every summer.  I pulled a list of lots of fun flamingo options below.  Click away!

50 Elements of SMIJ Style • #9 • A Fabulous Cover-Up is Top Priority

I believe this so much so that I’ve designed and manufactured my own!

But, mine aren’t the only ones I appreciate.  A great cover-up is essential for beach time and it has lots of requirements.  First of all, it needs to … cover you up, but also be flattering, great on a bike, show off a tan, be an extension of your swimsuit and allow room to build sand castles, pull wagons and flow in the breeze.  Whew!  So much for one little piece of fabric to do.  Here are my current faves (mine and others…) with links below the picture.  Happy Beach Days Ahead…

#1 –  Endless Summer | #2 – Seafolly Gypsy | #3 – Mini Caftan | #4 – The Seaside Wrap | #5 – Mumu on the Beach | #6 – Flowy Caftan | #7 – Beaded Caftan | #8 – Pretty in Pink | #9 – Got the Beat | #10 – The Spartina Wrap | #11 – Maxi Shirtdress | #12 – Young, Wild & Free Caftan | #13 – Flamingo Open Tunic | #14 – Tassled Rose | #15 – Gingham Summer | #16 – Boyfriend Shirt | #17 – On-Trend & Off-The-Shoulder

How I Lost My Way…And Found it Again

I wanted to share a quick note about what you will see from SMIJ by Jill this year and what you WON’T see from SMIJ by Jill this Spring and Summer.

I started designing Resort Cover-Ups because I couldn’t find what I was dreaming up in my head.  There are beautiful Cover-Ups out there and I have quite a few of them.  But, I had this dream of a wrap style, brightly printed style and that I could not find.  So… I made it.  And, the adventure began.

I lost my way a little bit in my first year.  (continued below…)

Everyone was so excited for me and began sharing with me their dreams of their version of the perfect Cover-Up.  Wanting to please everyone and really enjoying my new abilities, I began trying to produce other’s dreams so they could have their perfect cover-up, too.  I began to realize that I was getting distracted and probably not the best one to make someone else’s dream anyway.  So, this year, I am laser focused on my original mission and I can’t wait for you to see the new fabrics and tweaks I’ve made to the design.  I love everything we’ve produced so far and am excited about adding to the collection this year.  {SHOP COVER-UPS HERE.}

Thanks for coming along on this adventure.  I hope you love what we’re making and want to wear them while you make memories near water this year.

Resort Cover-Ups in time for Labor Day Trips

I am very happy to share that we are on target to have the above five styles and colors from our first Resort Cover-Up Line available in time for Labor Day Weekend.  This is such a great way for me to celebrate the last weekend of summer.  Nine months ago there was one sketch on a post-it note and today I’m close to launching the first five styles with three more to follow.  I’ve been wearing the samples of each of these all summer and loving every minute of it.  They have traveled well, washed well, looked great, attracted compliments, taken me from beach to town and made me feel Southern Beach Chic.  I am so excited to share them with everyone soon.  I have made only a small number of each, but expect to add to the inventory as needed.

Thank you to all who have been supporting me along the way.  We’ve only just begun…

Made in Atlanta

I moved to Atlanta years ago with my college roommate and fell in love with the city.  I can still remember it was a particularly warm and sunny day in February and the air was so refreshing.  The city was so alive and unknown to me.  Many years later I’m living in the burbs with a husband and two kids, looking back on so many great professional and personal experiences Atlanta has brought to me, enjoying so many friendships and experiences and still enjoying this city as much as the day I arrived.

I am so happy to now be designing clothes Made in, not only the U.S.A, but Atlanta (  I am working with a great Atlanta based team, putting Atlantans to work and emerging as part of the Atlanta fashion industry.  I certainly never dreamed of this as I drove into Atlanta that February morning.

Here’s to a great city!
